Saint Joseph Notre Dame High School’s Class of 2009 graduated May 30 in a lively and emotional ceremony held in the Kelly Gymnasium. One hundred and sixteen graduates, their families and friends heard commencement speaker Kathie Montserrat’s “last lesson to the seniors,” a five-point list for them to keep in mind as they pursue the future. Montserrat, a well-known mentor to students and faculty on campus, retired this year after 21 years as an SJND social studies teacher and department chair. Principal Simon Chiu also addressed the crowd and Father Fred Riccio led the invocation.
Valedictorian Teresa Mooney, bound for UCLA, and Salutatorian Anna Patricia Jimenez, who is headed to Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, also spoke, calling on their fellow graduates to remember their days at SJND as they pursue their dreams. Fully 99 percent of this year’s graduates are headed to college, at schools ranging from the campuses of the University of California, to Santa Clara University, Stanford University and even West Point Academy. This year's graduating class received $2.4 milliion in merit based scholarships.
Following commencement, graduates followed a long-standing tradition at SJND and left the gym, flanked on both sides by the applauding faculty. Once gathered in the middle of Chestnut Street, the graduates cheered and tossed their mortarboards in the air, filling the sky with blue and orange.
"The quality Catholic education we received here, ground into every fiber of our being, every religion class we had to take, every liturgy we had together, makes us take those abilities we have and use them for the greater good out in the real world. Saint Joseph Notre Dame gave us the paints and techniques to create the picture of the world we wish to see- a better world."
Anna Patricia Jimenez, Salutatorian 2009
"And though many of us will be attending huge or distant universities next year, don't forget that each one of us was always known by name and face in the halls of St. Joe's. If we take this memory with us, no matter where we are, we will know that we are important, worthy of respect, and capable of making a difference."
Teresa Mooney, Valedictorian 2009
