SJND’s Summer Discovery Program is a unique combination of academics, athletics, and fun opportunities for students entering sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. Designed to be flexible and to facilitate the busy schedules of families, you can participate in these classes and camps individually for a half-day experience or combined for a full-day session.

Reading/Writing Discovery (June 16-June 27)
Novel Study Novels are a big part of high school academics and you'll love how this class prepares you to succeed in your future English classes. You'll learn how to get the most out of any novel you read and become familiar with many different types of authors as well as genres. You will learn literary terms and the steps needed to comprehend and critique what you read.
Creative Writing Do you love to write? Do you wish you enjoyed writing more? This is an opportunity for you to succeed as a writer, and to discover the pleasures and opportunities that writing can bring you. You will write the stories or poems that express your thoughts and ideas that are based on your own experiences. Along the way, you'll also learn to critique and revise them.
Journalism Mark Twain and Jack London, both started as newspaper reporters. Take a moment and walk in the shoes of a journalist—tackle leads, gather facts, and write stories—using authentic tools and techniques. You will also learn the print and layout processes as well as the business side of running a newspaper.
Preparing for Essays and Term Papers Do you dread writing essays and term papers? This class will teach you how to get those assignments under control and actually enjoy the process. You will learn organizational habits, note taking, outlining, test-taking tips, and working efficiently both in and out of class. You will learn all about sentences, paragraphs, and structure. And, as an added bonus, you’ll learn how to prepare for examinations.
Math/Technology Discovery (June 30-July 11, no sessions on July 4)
Strength in Numbers If you’re looking for a head-start in high school mathematics, this class works on manipulating numbers, equations, and understanding the general math concepts at work. You will focus on the transition from arithmetic to equation and variable manipulation. You will develop the foundation for reasoning and build math vocabulary, which will help to prepare you for future math classes.
How Things Work Sometimes the best way to know how something works is to take things apart. In this class, you will examine common household items as well as more elaborate machines. Your creativity and curiosity will drive you as you learn how to use simple tools and explore the workings of more complex machines. This is a great class if you love to tinker and build.
More Than Google Technology is a vital part of your education and this class will give you the skills you need to use that technology to help you succeed in high school. You will learn keyboarding, responsible internet searching, word processing strategies and more. You will have the opportunity to bring samples of your experiences home. You will build upon skills you already have as well as learn new skills and strategies.
Money and Finance for Kids Money makes the world go around and now is the time to learn how to make it work for you. Using games, workshops, and quests, you will see how money can grow (or shrink) in our economy. Savings, checking, credit, budgets and goal setting will all be explored.
Science Discovery (July 14-July 25) Marine Biology If you want to have fun while learning about San Francisco Bay’s marine environment and its diverse plants and animals, this is the class for you. A visit to Crab Cove marine reserve gives you a first-hand experience at wading, observation of wildlife, and coastal cleanup while providing you with exposure to a variety of habitats.
Nature Studies Never look at nature the same again! In this class you will discover the mysteries of the great outdoors. You will gather information just like real scientists by nature journaling and learning all about California’s native plants, flowers, and animals.
Chemistry In this exciting class you will study chemistry basics in our new science lab. Not only will you participate in lab activities and cool experiments, you will learn scientific vocabulary and the use of laboratory tools. This course will serve as a foundation for future science classes.
Biology Are you interested in life science? Held in our new state-of-the-art biology lab, you’ll use microscopes, specimens, computers, and scientific software to discover the world living around you.
Elective Courses
Photography Have you always wanted to take picture, but never knew the techniques to get great shots? In this class, you will become familiar with the basics of camera functions and learn techniques for creating compelling photographs that tell stories about their own lives and their greater community.
Dance You will work on strength training by incorporating the principles of Yoga and Pilates into learning the disciplines of ballet, modern, and jazz technique. You will work toward a final performance to showcase your work as a group, in duets, and solo pieces.
Art: Drawing and Painting In this class, taught by award winning art educator Audry Brown, you will explore many techniques of art--drawing, painting, collage, craft, and puppetry.

Afternoon Sports Camp
This coed sports camp is open to students entering sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. Held in the newly renovated SJND gymnasium, you can take part in traditional sports such as basketball and volleyball, and learn new sports such as speed badminton and pickle ball. You will also have an opportunity to participate in strength and conditioning activities in our renovated weight room and learn the principles of teamwork and good sportsmanship.
The Afternoon Sports Camp is directed by Chris Pondok, a physical education teacher at SJND and the coach of our men’s freshman basketball team. He received his B.S. degree from San Francisco State University and has worked for the Alameda Recreation and Park Department as a teacher and program coordinator. His passion for sports and his expertise in the areas of coaching and conditioning will help you to have a fulfilling summer athletic experience. Pondok will be assisted by SJND high school student teaching assistants who will mentor and guide you in this camp, creating a student/teacher ratio of no more than 10:1.
Center Court Camps
The following camps are activities that operate outside of the morning academic and afternoon sports camps available this summer. They are designed for students who wish to spend their time concentrating on a single activity for a longer period of time.
Beginning-Advanced Girls Volleyball Camp

This camp is for middle-school students who will enter fifth to eighth grade in the fall. From the beginning to the advanced player, our focus on fundamentals and skill development will help players of all abilities.
Boys Volleyball Camp

This camp is for boys who will enter sixth to ninth grade in the fall and will get you going in the sport of volleyball.
Volleyball camps will be held in the Saint Joseph Notre Dame High School gymnasium, 1011 Chestnut St., Alameda.

All-American Summer Food

Camp description: The All-American Food Camp focuses on typical American fare found throughout the U.S. for summer celebrations and everyday food. You will use recipes based on seasonal local ingredients and learn to prepare entrees that are both tasty and nutritious. By the end of the week, you will have learned basic food preparation, recipe reading, cooking, and cleanup.
Italian Culinary Camp July 14-18

Camp description: The Italian Culinary Cooking Camp focuses on typical Italian fare throughout the Italian regions with an emphasis from my family's northern Italian heritage. You will learn about nutritional information, serving sizes based on the Federal guidelines. You will use recipes based on seasonal local ingredients and learn to prepare entrees that are both tasty and nutritious. By the end of the week, you will have learned basic food preparation, recipe reading, cooking, and cleanup. You will also go on field trips to shop for fresh ingredients and visit food businesses to learn the source of various foods.
Improvisational Music Camp
June 30-July 11, July 14-July 25

$450 (each two-week session) Students will get the most out of the session by taking a two-week block, but they may sign up for a single week for $225. One-week sessions may be taken any of the four weeks that the music camp is offered.
Camp description: This camp focuses on the use of improvisation toward the development of an individual’s musical knowledge, personality, and skills. Instructors will introduce campers to a wide variety of musical styles and practices, encouraging campers to find their own voices in those idioms. Throughout the course, you will use and develop skills in “spontaneous composition” that will help you to both understand pre-existing musical worlds and create new music of your own.
You will:
Explore music improvisation as a means of discovering new, personal techniques for creating and writing your own music
Engage in a hands-on creative experience, regularly writing and/or performing your own work in various musical styles
Form your own groups--to be recorded at the end of the camp
Several musical styles will be explored by a team of experienced instructors, including, but not limited to:
Jazz
Blues
Modern Rock
American Folk Music
No prior improvisation or songwriting experience required; intermediate knowledge of instrument or voice is highly recommended.
Ceramics Camp
June 16 – 27
10 a.m. to noon

In this class, you will explore traditional hand building
methods in ceramics (coil, slab and pinch pot construction). You will
have the opportunity to create both functional vessels (bowls ,cups and
vases) and sculptures. Acrylic paint, glazes and underglazes will be used
to finish the projects. You will have the opportunity to create three to four
projects in the class.
General Methods: Demonstrations, lectures (slides), hands on activity
Course Objectives: To enliven the artist in you through basic ceramic methods that challenge you to develop your
present skills and create projects that will be both useful and
decorative.
