Nearly 100 fans turned out on April 19 to watch the SJND alumni team take on the current baseball team. The alumni team consisted on 13 former players and one coach—Pete Piombo ‘63. Piombo was honored before the game by having his jersey retired.
Also in attendance was former SJND Principal Tony Aiello. Piombo, Aiello, and current head coach Mark Palmore had the honor of throwing out the first pitch together.
“It was a great day and many alums said that they are looking forward to next year,” said Steve Ratto ’68, who along with Victor Republicano, helped organize the event. Following the game, about 40 alums enjoyed a gathering at McGee’s in Alameda. McGee’s also sponsored the snackbar for the game.
The alumni game and a paddle raise held at the Frank LaPorte Golf Classic also helped raise funds for the baseball program. If you would like to donate, please contact Rebecca Bischoff at rbischoff@sjnd.org or 510-814-7116 or send a check to SJND, 1011 Chestnut Street, Alameda, CA 94501.
