The very next batter, senior catcher Jesus “Chuy” Alvarez, hit a solo blast in almost the exact same spot over the right centerfield fence. The Highlanders fought back with four runs in the 6th to tie the score before the Pilots put up another 3 runs in the bottom of the inning, including a safety squeeze bunt by junior Sean Harding. The Pilot pitching bent but did not break to allow the offense to put up big numbers. Senior pitcher Dominic Ratto led the pitching staff, giving up 4 earned runs in 5 innings of work.

3/24--Encinal 8, SJND 2-- Encinal rallied for three runs in the 5th and four runs in the 7th to beat SJND 8-2 in BSAL varsity baseball action. The two Alameda schools fought a tough contest through four innings with St. Joe’s (4-2) taking the lead on a two-out single by senior Jesus “Chuy” Alvarez to drive in two runs. SJND went to middle relief after getting four quality innings from senior Dominic Ratto (4 inn., 1 run , 4 hits). The Pilots immediately faltered giving up a lead off hit-by-pitch and a walk. Down by 1 run and in a bunt situation, Encinal’s Adam Boyd read a rotation play perfectly and pulled his bat back to hit a ground ball through the vacated middle of the field. Boyd drove in one to tie the score, sent another to third, and reached second on the play. St. Joe’s countered with senior pitcher Jonathan Republicano who almost halted the attack by getting a ground ball and a strike out, but Jet’s second basemen Joe Serventi made the Pilots pay with a 2 RBI double to left center field to put the Jets ahead 4-2. Encinal never looked back riding Boyd’s 6 innings of 6 hit, 5 strikeout work and blew the game wide-open with 4 runs in the top of the seventh. Sean Harding, the junior 1st baseman for SJND, had three hits in defeat.

3/18--SJND 9, Salesian 8--
St. Joseph Notre Dame varsity baseball team survived a 5-run 7th inning uprising by Salesian to hang on 9-8. SJND dominated 6 innings of play led by the senior's strong pitching of Jonathan Republicano who had given up 2 earned runs and scattered 5 hits to that point. The Pilots (3-0, 1-0 BSAL) took a 9 to 3 lead into the 7th with hitting up and down their line-up. Junior Kyle Walling had 3 hits, and juniors Justin Oilar and Sean Harding had two hits apiece. Anthony Ratto, Chuy Alvarez, Zac Fowler, and Ollie Cunningham all drove in runs. Things got interesting when the Pride erupted for 5 runs against the tiring Republicano with a 2-run homerun by Tino Leite, followed by a 3-run homerun by K. Zaragoza. Fowler was finally given the ball in relief of Republicano and got the final two outs, the last one a lazy comeback line-drive to Fowler with the tying run at third base for the save.

The Pilots got a big 2 RBI hit from senior Anthony Ratto in the bottom of the 3rd. The inning began with a lead off single by sophomore Ollie Cunningham, who was sacrificed to second by junior Justin Oilar. Christopher "Smokey" Livingston then had a pinch hit single to move Cunningham to third. Junior Billy Johnson was intentionally walked to load the bases when Ratto, of the Anthony variety, hit a sharp single to right to drive in the decisive runs. The Pilots played strong defensively lead by Cunningham at third base and Oilar at second base, both with 4 assists each.
