SJND’s cocurricular activities complement the academic program.
They provide opportunities for students to deepen their faith, as well as develop their individual talents and interests, leadership potential, and social skills.
Additionally, they provide students with venues to form enduring friendships and to have fun.
Campus Life Team
For the past 15 years, SJND’s student government program has been on the cutting edge. The Campus Life Team (CLT), made up of the Associated Student Body (ASB) officers, Division Council Members, and the Campus Ministry Executive Board (CMEB), is a unique model of government that has been nationally recognized and adopted by many schools throughout the United States.
Because SJND is a Catholic college prep school, CLT attends to both the social and the spiritual events and activities on campus. The unique structure of CLT offers opportunities for many students with diverse interests to participate in student life. CLT emphasizes collaboration, leadership, project management, and team-building skills that serve the students through college and into their professional careers.
Service Learning Program
Service Learning is an instructional methodology that uses experiential learning and service to the community as a means to achieve instructional outcomes. Service Learning not only increases student engagement with course content, but it reminds students of the Catholic call to service ingrained in our school’s mission and school-wide learning results.
Each academic department makes use of service learning on a regular basis, and the school remains committed to increasing the frequency of service learning engagement.
An example of Service Learning at SJND? A group of freshman students and sophomores got together on a foggy Sunday morning to work on a community service project as part of their Honors Biology class.
The SJND students helped maintain the trails at Robert Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve in the Oakland Hills. They also spent some time studying ferns and banana slugs in the park.
Service Learning is part of the moral and religious education that SJND seeks to give its students. The goal is to instill in each student the values of faith and service. Students participate throughout their four years of high school in Service Learning.
