Students at Saint Joseph Notre Dame High School pursue an outstanding college preparatory curriculum, one that is both challenging and innovative. With dozens of electives, including astronomy, photography, world literature, public speaking, percussion ensemble and film studies, students have the opportunity to stretch themselves academically and explore their interests.
The curriculum at SJND truly focuses on the mind, body and spirit of the whole person.
Students have the opportunity to try out for 28 different sports team at SJND, from baseball and swimming to golf and cheerleading. The men's varsity basketball team is part of a storied program that has won a record four state championships and most recently won the California Div. V state championship in 2011 and defended the title in 2012.
Table tennis? We've got a club for that. How about surfing, cooking or gaming? We've got clubs for those, too. There are more than 20 different clubs at SJND, and students also have the opportunity to start a new club, expanding their chances to share their interests with others.
School activities and events are driven by a well-developed student government organization called the Campus Life Team. Students develop leadership, teamwork and social skills as they explore new passions and become comfortable with taking risks and achieving success.
SJND’s academic rigor and spiritual exploration ensures that students are well-prepared for advanced studies, and our graduates continue their academic studies, usually at the college level.
Time and again, we hear what sets SJND apart from other high schools is the strong sense of community. Students here are well-known by their teachers. Their teachers know their personalities, their study habits and their interests so that they are able to guide and support students successfully.
The Campus Ministry program serves the entire school community by fostering a love for Christ and opportunities to grow in faith and spirituality. Students are involved in the ministry of the school through retreats, theology classes, liturgies, reflection and service. The retreat program is an integral part of spiritual exploration and development and each student embarks on a retreat every year, culminating with the Kairos retreat during senior year. Students also participate in service learning, which integrates course curriculum and practical opportunities for students to learn new skills and contribute to society.
SJND is also enhanced by its connection to the Saint Joseph community parish. As a parish high school, SJND benefits from being supported by the church and its members. SJND students have a strong sense of belonging to a community that supports them academically, spiritually and emotionally.
