Dual Enrollment Program
Our dual enrollment program allows SJND students to take college-level courses and earn both high school and college credit simultaneously.
Overview
The SJND Dual Enrollment program is a partnership between SJND and the College of Alameda whereby COA creates specific sections of its courses for SJND students to enroll in. These courses are scheduled to fit with the SJND daily schedule, and SJND students remain on our campus for these courses. These courses are accredited UC/CSU approved college courses taught by COA professors, earning SJND students college credit. These courses are open to non-SJND students, but SJND students have priority registration and non-SJND students only attend class virtually. The dual enrollment courses offered are cycled each semester to give students with different interests opportunities to participate in the program.
Rationale
Dual enrollment classes are a great opportunity for students to add breadth and rigor to their high school academic profile. Dual enrollment classes are classes not traditionally taught in high schools, allowing students to explore subjects typically reserved for college. Dual enrollment classes are college classes, which earns students college credit similar to AP courses. Like AP courses these courses provide a GPA bump, but unlike AP courses, student’s do not need to take an AP exam at the end of the year to earn college credit.
Dual enrollment courses have the rigor and content of college courses, but they are specifically designed with high school students in mind. The subjects and professors are carefully chosen. The format of the class allows SJND students to interact with college students, but only virtually, in a controlled environment.
Program Specifics: 2024-2025 Academic Year
Three dual enrollment classes are being offered this year:
-
Introduction to Speech - Fall 2024: this course is a core English requirement for all CSUs. It is typically one of the first courses college students take. *COA class
-
Ethnic Studies - Spring 2025: this course counts towards the SJND social sciences graduation requirements and is perfectly suited for the incredibly diverse SJND student body. *COA class
-
Catholic Entrepreneurship and Design - Spring 2025: this course is taught by a trained SJND staff member (Fr. Steve) and accredited through the Catholic University of America. It counts towards the SJND theology graduation requirements.
The two *COA classes - Speech and Ethnic Studies - are synchronous online classes. An SJND teacher supervises and facilitates the course.
