The Arts at SJND

Lead through Creativity

Drama and Musical Theater

Participate either on stage or backstage during the annual musical theater productions, and travel to performance festivals. The school’s spring musical is a showcase for your talent, and more than 80 students participate in the production. SJND students have presented a range of shows, including the Tony Award-winning musical In the Heights. In 2014, SJND's performance of In the Heights placed sixth in the California Musical Theater Honors competition.

Band and Musical Composition

In music, you may travel to perform at festivals as part of our award-winning program. Each spring, our band performs at the annual Music in the Parks Festival at California's Great America. In addition, as a music student you are encouraged from the beginning to compose music and present your compositions at the Winter Arts Festival, as well as in class.

Visual and Literary Arts

As a visual art student, you have the opportunity to exhibit your work at a local gallery and in area exhibitions. Students have exhibited their work at the Oakland Museum of California, at the offices of the Bay Area congressional delegation and at a local exhibit space in Alameda, where we host a gallery-style opening each year.

Prisms magazine, an award-winning arts magazine, provides you with the opportunity to publish poetry, prose, visual art and musical scores. As a staff member, you can gain experiences editing literary and artistic pieces, as well as have access to real world experience with design and layout. Each Fall the Prisms staff invites SJND students, faculty, and community members, including Alameda’s Poet Laureate, to share poetry, music, and art at an annual reception meant to celebrate the arts at SJND. Prisms continues to win national awards, and its contributors have been published in many external publications.
