Current Status: Long-Term Dismissal Activated
As of March 12, we have made the decision, in conjunction with the Diocese of Oakland Department of Schools, to voluntarily activate our long-term dismissal plan. We reached this decision out of an abundance of caution, and in adherence with directives from local health agenices. On Monday, March 16, Alameda County announced a "shelter in place" order in an effort to mitigate community transmission of COVID-19. As a result, the SJND campus is closed to all parties at this time. To date, no members of the SJND community have tested positive for COVID-19.
Distance learning, following the Altered School Schedule below, will officially take effect on Wednesday, March 18. SJND will continue distance learning through April 8 and then begin Easter break from April 9-17. Distance learning will resume on April 20 and continue through the remainder of the school year (May 28).

Attendance and General Expectations
All students are expected to virtually attend each of their classes according to the altered schedule. Attendance will be taken and submitted to administration using the following codes:
Again, this is an unprecedented time. We expect that all students will be moral, engaged, and responsible learners as we all navigate this distance learning model together. Please respect the time and energy our teachers put in to make learning possible over the next couple of weeks. All lessons taught during the long-term dismissal are aligned with essential learning standards/outcomes, and students can expect to be assessed on these learning standards/outcomes on semester exams.
When presenting yourself on a recording and/or in a live video session, please ensure that the background location, sound, and physical appearance are PROFESSIONAL. While you do not need to be in uniform, you do need to present yourself in a manner consistent with the expectations for casual dress at SJND. Our goal is to replicate the professional setting that we have at school in an online setting.
Special Schedule Periods
Office Hours: Each week there is a 3-hour block for Office Hours. During the Office Hours period, all teachers will be available for individual or small group check-ins via Google Hangouts Chat or Meet. Teachers will monitor emails and Schoology submissions during this time. This is a good time to schedule a second meeting with your teachers. Counselors will also be available for virtual check-ins during this time, in addition to meetings they already have scheduled with you.
Virtual F/S or Dept. Mtgs, Clubs + Student Life Activities: On Monday mornings, Faculty/Staff members will be involved in Faculty/Staff or Department meetings until 11:00 a.m. During this time, students will have the opportunity to engage in Club/Student Life Activities. While exact activities are still being planned out by ASB, students can stay up to date by following Kenny on Instagram @kenny.the.pilot and checking the Daily Bulletin. Although our distance learning plan does not start until Wednesday, our first activity will take place on Tuesday with a virtual dress up day for spirit points to celebrate St Patrick’s Day!!!! Mrs. Stein will email students with more information later today.
Student Technology Use for Online Learning
While school is moved to online learning, there are several tools we’d like students to use, and expected protocols we’d like students to observe. While we can’t meet in person, you can reach out to your teachers and/or Mr. McKee for technical support through email, Google Chat, or even video conferencing. To serve as a base for this new adventure in online learning, we have protocols and expectations, links to resources, and training for common tech tools listed below.
Each class will have a 3 hour meeting time over the course of a week. A portion of the time will include a whole class conference call, using Google Hangouts Meet or Zoom. The rest of the time will be used for small group meetings, individual student/teacher meetings and course work. Our long-term dismissal calendar can be seen here. The expectation is that you will be on time to join your whole class sessions (on time is 5 minutes early) and respectfully participate. For even the most tech savvy teachers, things can go wrong during a video conference. Remember that many of your teachers are working far outside their comfort zones. Please be helpful and patient as we all do our best to make distance learning work.
Your teachers will share the video conference links with you ahead of your meeting time. The links will be sent via email and posted on the top of your course Schoology page. If you have not completed the Home Internet survey, please take 30 seconds to do so now. While most of us have Internet access at home, not all of us do. With offices and business closing, families may need to decide which bills and expenses are the most important to pay. Comcast has stepped up and is offering free Internet, for families that qualify, as well as free hotspots. Here are some links to help with these services if you need them.

Check Your Email
Yes, it’s old school, but if we want the new online school to work, email is going to be an important means of communication. The school and your teachers will expect that you are reading the messages they send through email and you will be held accountable for that messaging.
We will also check our email. When you contact us, we will reply to you as soon as possible and no later than 24 hours from the time you sent your email. Remember that while a teacher or administrator might get back to you in the evening, we cannot be expected to be active and online outside of business hours.
Google Hangouts Chat and Meet
Your teachers have all been trained to use Google Hangouts Chat and Meet. They may use these tools to send you updates, host group chats or to hold video conferences. These tools are both available on your browser (chat.google.com and meet.google.com) but it’s also good to install the apps on your phone (if you have one).
Remember that you need to observe classroom protocol and expectations when you’re in a Chat, Hangout, or any online class activity.
- Speak/type with respect
- Use “I” statements when voicing your opinions
- Mute your microphone and camera when you enter a Hangout
- Don’t be a distraction to the class activity
- Respect the privacy of the classroom and do not take screenshots or screencasts during video conferencing. Posting of any class time activity is a violation of school policy and an individual’s privacy.
Zoom Video Conferencing
Some teachers will prefer to use Zoom rather than Google Hangouts Meet. I recommend that you prepare for that by downloading the Zoom Client. You do not have to have a Zoom account to attend a Zoom meeting. You may wish to create an account, but that is not required to participate in a Zoom meeting.
Please note that effective Friday, March 13, Saint Joseph Notre Dame High School has made the decision to suspend all co-curricular events and activities, including athletics. All practices and competitions, league and non-league, on and off campus, are postponed until further notice.
The CDC has posted information on Affected Geographic Areas with Widespread or Sustained Community Transmission, identifying those countries with possible travel restrictions. These affected areas may change, and we will continue to monitor the CDC site. Students and their families traveling to and from these areas may be asked to self-quarantine for 14 days upon returning home. Please contact Ms. Guevara if this applies to you or a family member.
We received official notification from EF Tours that due to the U.S. Department of State announcement of the Global Travel Alert effective immediately, EF will not be sending any groups on tour in March and April, including our scheduled Academic Immersion trip to Costa Rica and Panama. Additional details have been provided to those families registered for the trip. Please contact Ms. Vantrease if you have any additional questions.

- This remains a fluid situation. Should any changes be made to the plan outlined in this communication, teachers, students and parents will be notified immediately.
