Pilots Across the Pond: Students and Faculty Explore Historic Sites in Greece and Italy
On March 26, 41 students, along with faculty chaperones, commenced a 10-day trip to explore the historical sites of Greece and Italy. Each year, SJND students are provided the opportunity to extend their education outside the classroom and obtain new cultural experiences with Academic Immersion Trips, alternating humanities and science-focused programs each year. Past destinations include Thailand, Peru, England and Costa Rica.
This year’s trip kicked off in Greece, where the participants explored Athens, Delphi and Patras. In Athens, they took in the Panathenaic Stadium, the site of the first modern Olympics, as well as the Acropolis and Parthenon, the ancient monument and former temple dedicated to the goddess Athena. They also explored Delphi where they saw the site of Apollo’s Oracle.
The group then continued on to Italy, where one of the highlights was definitely the authentic Italian food.
“We got to do a street food tour in a town called Bari where we saw old women making fresh pasta for Easter, had fresh focaccia bread and got a pastry,” explained SJND teacher and trip lead Christina Arias.
They took a boat tour in Capri before continuing on to Sorrento and then Pompeii, where they celebrated Easter Mass in the beautiful Church of Pompeii.
The trip concluded in Rome where the group was able to explore many fascinating sites including the Vatican/St. Peter's Basilica, the Roman Catacombs and Colosseum, Piazza Navona and the Spanish Steps.
Next year, a group of students will travel to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands for a service learning and cultural immersion trip.
