Baseball and Softball Teams Capture North Coast Section Championships!
On Saturday June 4, on the heels of SJND’s graduation that morning, the Pilots Men’s Baseball and Women’s Softball teams ended their seasons as North Coast Section Division 5 Champions!
NCS Softball: Pilots Win in Extra Innings
The No. 2 seed Lady Pilots headed north to battle it out against No. 1 seed Cloverdale High.
The fate of Saturday's championship came down to a cloud of dust at home plate. The two teams fought all the way through a scoreless nine innings, and Pilots pitcher Anekaila Crevani ’16 pitched 10 innings in the pitching duel. With international tiebreaker rules in effect, Danielle Pohlson ’19 singled to score Gina Bonardi ’17 from second base in the top of the 10th inning. In the bottom of the 10th, Leslie Gomez ’19 threw out a runner at the plate for a dramatic 1-0 victory.
This is the first NCS title in softball for the Pilots!
NCS Baseball: Pilots Dominate with 10-1 Victory
At the title game at Diablo Valley College, the Pilots optimized strong pitching from Steven Manzo ’16 and big plays on offense from Augustus Moseley ’16 and Matt Graybeal ’16 to defeat College Prep 10-1.
The Pilots took momentum early on with three runs in the bottom of the first. Starting in the second inning, pitcher Steven Manzo ’16 retired eight College Prep batters in a row. The Pilots really turned up the heat in the fifth inning, where 10 batters came to the plate and scored five loud runs. Augustus Moseley ’16 finished the game with two doubles and a triple and three runs scored. "He can put the barrel on the ball," SJND coach Mark Castillo said. Matt Graybeal ’16 knocked in three runs and Vincent Republicano ’16, Hunter Hennigh ’17, Satchel Fisher ’16 and Patrick Yajko ’16 each had two hits.
"They're a great team," College Prep coach Duane McNeil said. "They put pressure on you, they've got a lot of fast runners up and down their lineup, they execute their small ball very well so you're always pinching in, always worried about that, and it opens up holes and they took advantage of that."
The men's 25-5 record is the best in SJND Baseball history.
