Bay Scholars Meet Former President Bill Clinton
Two years ago, SJND began a partnership with Bay Scholars, a scholarship program jumpstarted by Clint and Janet Reilly in 2007. Clint’s father, a milkman of Berkeley Farms Creamery and proud parent of 10, could not afford his son’s education at Bishop O’Dowd. As a result, Clint became a scholarship recipient and was driven to give back by starting the Bay Scholars program. He recognized that a number of Bay Area Catholic high schools were successfully creating pathways to colleges and universities through strong service missions, rigorous core curriculum, discipline and values, as well as partnerships with parents.
SJND is now one of eight college preparatory high schools in the Bay Area who partner with Bay Scholars, with 18 Bay Scholar recipients who each receive a four-year scholarship. Clint and Janet select all of the students - students they believe have a unique capacity to be active change-makers in their communities. Executive Director Caitlin Cavanaugh as well as the Reilly’s are extremely supportive of Pilot students, having recently visited SJND for a breakfast where they learned about our student scholars’ goals.
The Reilly’s also invited SJND’s Admissions team and students to a campaign fundraising event featuring former President Bill Clinton, California Senate President Pro Tempore Kevin De Leon, and President Obama’s 2008 campaign manager David Plouffe at the Julia Morgan Ballroom in San Francisco.
“Our students received an opportunity to meet the 42nd President of the United States, and be part of the history that is being written today,” said SJND Director of Admissions Eileen Graybeal. “We are so grateful to Bay Scholars for including us in this awesome adventure! These students were growing up during President Clinton’s time in office, so they understood what this opportunity meant.”
Thank you Bay Scholars for making it possible for promising students to have access to and flourish at SJND!
