Class of 2015 Takes Flight
In May, a number of culminating festivities celebrated the Class of 2015’s spirit and achievements. In addition to celebrating awards for academic excellence and community contributions among the graduates, we were also blessed to have distinguished alumni who shared their words of wisdom with our graduates.
Stanford MBA graduate Ron Lewis '04 offered sage advice at the senior assembly: "Be well-rounded, be generous, and be resilient." At commencement, Patricia O’Hara ’67, professor of law and former dean at University of Notre Dame, discussed the values sometimes heralded by pop culture as the path to happiness and success. She contrasted these with the values that undergird the faith-based education that the graduates received at SJND--in particular, sacrificing self-interest for the common good; building an inclusive community; reaching out to the most marginalized in response to the call of the gospels; and making the two great commandments, love of God and love of neighbor, the cornerstone of life. Additionally, Class of 2015 valedictorian Courtney Shojinaga (at commencement) and salutatorian Maya Rowell (at Baccalaureate liturgy) provided fellow graduates with shared memories and aspirations for the future.
We are blessed to have extraordinary alumni across the generations and this year’s celebrations were a fine reminder of the great achievements and sense of purpose that shape Pilot pride. Thank you, Class of 2015, our newest alumni community members. We look forward to hearing about your college experiences and seeing you back on campus next year at the Alumni Games over Thanksgiving holiday and Back from College Day. We also look forward to welcoming you back some day on Alumni Career Day and even as commencement speakers as your adventures continue. Congratulations!
