Coach Lippi Nominated for California Coach of the Year

Coach Lippi and Temidayo after 2014 state championship

With his third state championship firmly in hand, as well as a winning NorCal record that saw him take the Pilots to the California title game each year since 2011, Coach Don Lippi has been nominated as California Coach of the Year.

SJND was invited by the California Coaches Association to nominate Lippi, who has coached varsity basketball for 35 years, beginning in 1978 at SJND. He has also coached at St. Patrick-St. Vincent, Skyline and St. Ignatius. He has won three state championships, all with the Pilots: in 2004, 2011 and 2014.

Lippi, 66, has an astounding record of coaching 994 games, with 759 wins and 235 losses. He teaches AP Government, Government, and Phys Ed at SJND, and his commitment on the court is rivaled by his engaging teaching style, making him one of the most popular teachers at SJND.

When asked his most memorable moments as a coach, Lippi has a list:

  • Coaching 6,000 students and players and having them comeback and coach.
  • Coaching his son, Dominic Lippi ’11, for four years and ending with a state championship.
  • Coming back from 19 points down with three minutes to go to win the NorCal championship in 2011
  • And, finally, “Everyday I get to interact with our student athletes is a memorable moment.”

The 2014 California Coach of the Year will be announced in June.
