Dream Flight Benefit Raises Record $95,000 for Tuition Assistance

On October 14, alumni, parents, friends, faculty and staff gathered at the Claremont Country Club in Oakland for the Third Annual Dream Flight benefit to raise money to help fuel the Dream Flights of current and future Pilots. Together, we raised a record $95,000 to support tuition assistance for deserving young Pilots, up from $81,000 last year and $64,000 a year prior.

The evening kicked off with a sunset social hour in which guests had the opportunity to connect with fellow classmates and community members. Guests enjoyed live entertainment by Sara and Swingtime and a musical showcase by current SJND students Edbertt Frez ‘18 and Gabriel Felix ‘18, followed by the dinner program.

Keynote speakers Jesus Sanchez, Jr. ‘06, currently a senior success cloud plan advisor at Salesforce, and Ozi Amuzie ‘18 spoke about their Saint Joseph Notre Dame experiences and the impact SJND donors have made on their education and personal dreams.

Amuzie ‘18, current ASB president and founder of the Feeding America Club, is the fourth of five sisters to attend SJND. She described her sisters’ successes - which include attending prestigious colleges including UCLA, USC and University of Notre Dame - and the transformation she’s experienced as a result of her involvement in student activities and encouragement from faculty, which ultimately helped her identify her passions.

“SJND and the faculty here have encouraged me to pursue my passion for the sciences. After taking the initial freshman year biomed courses, sophomore year I was encouraged to participate in the Alameda County Science Fair. My project on freshwater pollutants ended up winning second place in environmental science...This summer I completed an eight-week internship at Stanford University's Pain and Stress Neurobiology Lab. Throughout the summer I helped my mentor, anesthesiologist Dr. Sunny Anand, conduct a project where we aimed to establish the normative level of cortisol in the hair of young children. At the end of the summer, I traveled to Bethesda Maryland to present our findings at the National Institutes of Health. Because of the background in science I developed at [Saint Joseph Notre Dame], I have been fortunate enough to explore science beyond just the classroom setting.”

Amuzie plans to continue researching in college, and hopes to pursue a career in medicine. She expressed gratitude for the SJND community and to those who have helped make her SJND education possible, in turn, helping to shape her dreams.

“I know you all have been asked here tonight to support students like me who have benefitted from an SJND education. Please know that my SJND experience and that of my sisters has been made possible by friends like you. We’ve been able to take advantage of the opportunities presented to us, to grow and to find our passion and direction, all the while remembering to give back to our communities.  It is because of you and the many gifts we’ve been given through this education, that we’ve grown to love and appreciate the SJND community so deeply.”

The evening concluded with the inaugural Christi Matri Award, given to Clint Reilly and Bay Scholars for outstanding service to Saint Joseph Notre Dame High School. Reilly was presented with a proclamation signed by Bishop Michael C. Barber, declaring October 14, 2017 Bay Scholars Day in the Diocese of Oakland.

Our heartfelt thank you to the Kelly Family for their continued generosity in support of Dream Flight and Saint Joseph Notre Dame High School students. Many thanks also to our Dream Flight planning committee, honorary committee and sponsors. This special evening wouldn’t have been possible without all of your support!
