Faculty Artist Exhibits at LA County Arboretum & Botanic Garden
The LA County Arboretum & Botanic Garden recently hosted DIGITAL NATURE, a spectacular art show of animation, light and sound at one of the most treasured public gardens in Los Angeles. SJND art instructor Andy McKee, along with a group of acclaimed contemporary artists, was invited to display his video art at the show.
McKee’s piece Still Life was made in collaboration with noted local landscape architect, Shirley Alexandra Watts, who also curated the show. The video was a study of plant movement and cell biology, projected within the greenhouse where those plant movements actually take place. His video projection included time-lapse cinematography shot in the mid-twentieth century, and confocal microscope images -in which lasers shoot a pinhole of light through a specimen to capture images of layers of cells on a plane. Hundreds of these layers combined to create a stack of images, giving the impression of traveling through the bud of a flower.

More than 1200 people attended the event which included several noted video artists including John Carpenter, Kevin Cooley, Courtney Egan and Chris Doyle. Congratulations!
