Saint Joseph Notre Dame High School congratulates SJND alumnus and NBA legend Jason Kidd ‘92 on being inducted to the 2018 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame!
During Jason’s career as a Varsity Basketball player at SJND, under the coaching direction of the late Frank LaPorte, he had a game high of 46 points (school record), scored a total of 2661 points and led two state championship teams (‘91 and ‘92). In addition to his impressive stats, Jason received numerous awards, including: All-American two years in a row, Player of the Year for Northern California (3 years) and California Player of the Year (3 years), the Naismith Award as nation’s top high school player his senior year, and Parade and USA Today High School Player of the Year.
Following high school, Jason had offers from nearly every major basketball program but chose to stay in the Bay Area and play college ball for the Cal Golden Bears at UC Berkeley. Jason was drafted second overall by the Dallas Mavericks in the first round of the 1994 NBA draft, the beginning of a successful 19-year NBA career.
Most recently, Jason served as head coach of the Brooklyn Nets, followed by four years as the head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks.
Jason was a 10-time NBA All-Star, a five-time First Team All-NBA selection and a four-time First Team All-Defense selection. He won an NBA Championship in 2011 as a member of the Dallas Mavericks, and was a two-time Olympic Gold Medalist during his pro career, as part of Team USA in 2000 and 2008. Jason is a member of the SJND Athletic Hall of Fame, as well as the Cal Athletic Hall of Fame. His 1990-1991 State Championship team will also be inducted into the SJND Athletic Hall of Fame in a ceremony at Scott’s Seafood in Jack London Square on April 28.
The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2018 will be enshrined on Friday, September 7 in Springfield, Massachusetts, the home of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Many have fond memories of Jason’s years at SJND, including former coach Gordie Johnson, who coached Jason alongside Coach LaPorte. He had the following message for Jason:
“Congratulations, Jason, on a fabulous career of basketball and getting inducted to the class of 2018 Basketball Hall Of Fame.”
“Going back to watching you as an incoming freshman I knew there was something very special about you as a player. I had the luxury to have worked and played with other professionals, and saw that you possessed a drive that you rarely see in an athlete: your drive to play hard every play, your commitment to team and teammates and your refuse-to-lose attitude, not only in games but in practice and workouts as well. I said back then that you were one of the best I have ever seen and that you were destined to become a HOF’er, and guess what? You are.”
“There are a lot of people that are very proud of your accomplishments, from high school to the pros, but I would have to say that your Dad, Coach LaPorte (God bless them both) and myself are the proudest of them all. It’s been a great ride watching you grow from a kid to a man.”
Jason, from all of us at SJND, congratulations on this well-deserved honor!
