Meet SJND's New Faculty!

It is with great pleasure that we welcome the following new faculty/staff members into the SJND family this school year:

Patrick Ban, Math Teacher

Patrick comes to SJND from the University of Notre Dame’s Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE) Program. Patrick earned a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Notre Dame and has worked as a lab intern at the National Center for Nanoscience and Technology. Patrick was also a Trumpet Section Member in Notre Dame’s Marching Band of the Fighting Irish. Patrick enjoys playing the trumpet and running Track and Field.

Meghan Shull, French Teacher

Meghan comes to SJND from Shmoop University, an educational website that offers Learning Guides, Online Courses, College Readiness Prep, and Test Prep for students, creating French 1 and French 2 curriculum for online courses. Meghan currently teaches French part-time at the Polyglottist Language Academy for adults in Berkeley. Meghan earned her Master’s in French from University of Maryland-College Park and a B.A. in French and English from Michigan State University.

Catherine Crawford, English Teacher

Catherine ("Cat") comes to SJND from West Oakland Middle School, where she taught 7th and 8th grade English for the past year. Prior to her experience at WOMS, Cat taught English at Encinal Junior and Senior High School and Alameda Community Learning Center. Cat also has previous professional experience as an Intervention Specialist and Behavioral Paraprofessional. Cat earned a Master’s in Education from University of San Diego, a B.A. in English Language Arts, and a Clear CA Teaching Credential in English.

Jessica De Mesa '12, Learning Support Coordinator and Counseling Administrative Assistant

Jessica rejoins the Pilot family after graduating from SJND in 2012 and from SJES in 2008. Jessica worked as an academic coach/tutor in SJND’s summer school program in the past and served as the Summer Academics Coordinator this past Summer, overseeing all summer academic programs. Jessica graduated from CSU Long Beach in 2016 with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Marketing minor. She enjoys playing Basketball and was a former Women’s Varsity Basketball Player. Go Pilots!

Kara Gasparrini, Science Teacher

Kara comes to SJND from the University of Notre Dame’s Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE) Program. Kara earned her B.S. from Notre Dame in Neuroscience and has worked as a research assistant in Yale University’s Department of Psychiatry. Kara has also served as a Liturgical Coordinator and Spiritual Commissioner at Notre Dame. Kara enjoys running, community service, and playing the flute.

Joanne Osterberg, Art Teacher

Joanne comes to SJND from San Lorenzo High School, where she taught 2D and 3D art. Joanne also taught Visual Art at Arroyo High School and Moreau Catholic High School in the past, and is very excited to be returning to a faith-based school environment. Prior to teaching, Joanne worked at LucasFilm, a film and television production company based in San Francisco. Joanne received her BFA in Fine Arts from Dominican University and a Preliminary CA Single Subject Teaching Credential in Art.

Alex Ponce, Science Teacher

Alex joins the SJND faculty with several years of tutoring experience in ESL, Calculus, Chemistry, and Biology. Alex currently serves as the head coach of SJND’s Men’s Junior Varsity Basketball Team and as the assistant coach for the Men’s Varsity Basketball Team.  Alex formerly worked as a Sales Coordinator at Power Standards Lab. Alex earned a B.S. in Cell and Molecular Biology from the University of Michigan.

Pablo Sandoval, Spanish Teacher

Pablo comes to SJND from KIPP San Francisco College Preparatory School, where he taught Spanish and U.S. Government. Pablo also taught Spanish at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School in Baltimore, MD before moving back to the Bay Area. Prior to teaching, Pablo worked in community development and sales. Pablo earned a Master’s in Library and Information Science from University of Washington, a J.D. from Yale Law School, and a B.A. in Political Science from UC Berkeley. Pablo enjoys soccer, half marathon running, and Latin American Culture.

Chris Silva, Campus Minister

Chris comes to SJND after working for the Diocese of Oakland while completing his thesis at the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology. Prior to that, Chris also served as the Assistant Campus Minister at Saint Francis High School in southern California, and was a Student Friar in formation with the Capuchin Friars for the priesthood. Chris earned a B.F.A. from California State University Fresno in Graphic Design and a MATh in Religion in the Arts. Chris enjoys photography and art.

Maryanne Stehr, Learning Services Counselor

Maryanne comes to SJND from St. Elizabeth Elementary School in Oakland, where she taught Special Needs Early Intervention Reading, Middle Grade Language Arts and Math since 2008. Prior to her years at SEES, Maryanne was a Special Needs Consultant and Tutor in the North Oakland area, founded and directed the Mother Pia Special Needs Program at SEES, and co-founded the Diocesan Special Needs Council. Maryanne possesses a Master’s Degree in Special Education and a Clear CA Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from St. Mary’s College and earned a B.S. from UC Davis. Maryanne is the proud mother of Emily Stehr (‘17) and Jack Stehr (‘20).

Lanessa Vantrease, ASL Teacher

Lanessa comes to SJND from St. Elizabeth High School, where she taught ASL, Music Appreciation, Drama, and Chorus. She was also the Student Activities Coordinator. Prior to her years at SEHS, Lanessa taught middle school Music, Religion, PE, and Choir at De Marillac Academy in San Francisco. Lanessa earned a B.A. in Music from St. Xavier University in Chicago. Lanessa enjoys all Chicago sports, going to the beach, and has a twin sister who is also a teacher.
