New! Countdown to College
Q: Can you talk about college fairs and why they're important?
College fairs are opportunities for students to learn more about colleges, especially if they have not had the chance to visit the school or don't know much about a particular institution.
This month, for example, the annual Alameda CityWide college night is October 7 at 6 p.m. at College of Alameda gymnasium. More than 80 institutions will be there, including many UCs, Columbia University, the U.S. Naval Academy and others.
College fairs are typically attended by 20 to 100 (and sometimes more) colleges and universities from around the country. Students can meet one-on-one with a college representative and learn more about admissions, financial aid and other questions they may have. It is a good opportunity to learn about a lot of schools all at once. Area college fairs and information sessions are listed on SJND's web-based college counseling program Family Connection.
Q: Financial aid will be a major factor in our student's college choice. Can you tell us more?
Financial aid is an important part of the college decision. Parents and students interested in learning more about the college financial aid process are invited to attend College Financial Aid Night on November 6 at 7 p.m. in Notre Dame Hall.
Karen Cooper, Director of Financial Aid at Stanford University, will be our guest speaker. It is highly encouraged that parents of seniors attend. RSVP to the Counseling Department.
In the meantime, there are some important college counseling updates for seniors.
