New Teacher Spotlight: Ms. Shannon Mueller
SJND welcomes Shannon Mueller to our Science Department this year, where she teaches Biology, Human Body Systems, and Biomedical Sciences.
Ms. Mueller studied Biology and Spanish at Carleton College, where she had the opportunity to study abroad in Merida, Mexico and Santiago, Chile. A seasoned traveler, she has visited every country in Central America (besides El Salvador), and half the countries in South America; she most recently backpacked through Patagonia during their winter. She also has a Master's degree from Loyola Marymount University in Urban Policy Education Administration.
Prior to coming to SJND, Shannon taught at a public school in San Jose for two years through the Teach for America program, followed by one year at a San Francisco charter school. She spent her summer teaching an environmental program with the Student Conservation Association, and another with SMASH (Summer Math and Science Honors Academy) at Stanford. Ms. Mueller makes her science classes hands-on, interactive, and team-based, believing that students learn best when they teach each other. She enjoys developing labs where students get to design their own questions and procedures, hoping to make her students as passionate about biology as she is. She appreciates how welcoming the SJND staff and parent community has been, and how her students are kind and respectful to each other in class.
Her advice to students is: “Develop a growth mindset-- you can do anything you put your mind to doing. Never stop learning and developing the curious mind you have now.” Besides traveling, Ms. Mueller is also a competitive runner and backpacker, member of a book club, and Sunday School teacher in her church.
