Pilots Dig Pink
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Saint Joseph Notre Dame High School is proud to announce that the Women’s Volleyball Program is hosting its Fourth Annual Dig Pink Volleyball Match on Friday, October 17 against Encinal High School at SJND's Kelly Gymnasium. JV plays at 5:30pm, Varsity at 7:00pm. Come to the game--support the fight against breast cancer and your Pilots!
What is Dig Pink? When Rick Dunetz finally received his chance to coach volleyball in Springfield, Virginia for a struggling team, he inspired the girls with his passion and leadership. However, Rick was distracted by a serious personal concern: his mother Gloria had just been diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time. After sharing this with his team, the girls decided they not only wanted to win for themselves and their coach, but also for his mom. They experienced a “miracle season,” winning the district championship title, and inspiring Gloria on the sidelines to keep fighting. It was this team and this season that led Rick to create the Side-Out Foundation, so that he could reach out to other athletes and benefit cancer patients through education and events, one of which is the Dig Pink game.
With approximately 1 in 8 women being diagnosed with breast cancer, SJND introduced Dig Pink in October 2010 hoping it would resonate with the members of our community as a means to help raise funds and awareness for a cause that affects many of the people we know—our mothers, sisters, wives, friends and colleagues. Reaching our annual goal helps us strive to work a mere fraction as hard as the women we love while they fight for their lives each day.
Our Dig Pink goal for October 2014 is $2500. T-shirts will be available for sale before the game and during the event. There will be no admission for the game. Instead we will be accepting donations to the Side-Out Foundation at the door.
Each and every dollar raised for this event will be given to the Side-Out Foundation to raise awareness for breast cancer and help women, and their families, battle against this disease. Join SJND in “digging” for a cure and supporting women struggling with breast cancer.
