“Prisms” Awards Momentum Continues

Now in its 28th year, Saint Joseph Notre Dame High School’s literary art magazine Prisms continues to garner high praise.

We are proud to share that the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) has awarded the 2018 edition of Prisms an “Excellent” ranking in the NCTE REALM Program (Recognizing Excellence in Art and Literary Magazines). This recent accolade comes just weeks after receiving word that, for the second year in a row, the American Scholastic Press Association awarded Prisms First in the magazine category. This is the 31st and 32nd award for the publication respectively.

In 1990, Mrs. Betsy Norris, now retired, helped create Prisms, a name which is meant to reflect the diversity of the SJND student body through different media and genres. What was once a “modest little book of creative writing and black and white art,” Mrs. Norris recalled, has been transformed into an award-winning technicolor assortment of poetry, photography, art, music and short stories over the years.

Today, Prisms is moderated by former teacher-turned-Director of Technology Mr. Andy McKee, as well as English teacher Mrs. Colette Gunn-Graffy. While the Prisms staff has changed and grown over the years, and the content has expanded to reflect the evolution of art forms and worldviews, the spirit of Prisms remains the same.

“While Prisms has included printed sheet music of original student compositions for years, this year we’ve opened submissions to include online audio and video work that we’ll publish with QR codes,” Mr. McKee explained. “The goal of Prisms is to showcase student creative expression in all media and we’re excited to introduce these new works. The book layout has also grown to include more design elements including colorful pages, artful font choices and thematic graphics,” he added.

Congratulations to the 2017-2018 student editorial staff, including editors Cristelle Hugo ’18, Sophie Freitas ’18, Emilia Kaldis ’19, and designers Joshua Bernaldo ’18 and Mia Karlsrud ’18, the faculty moderators and all who contributed to the 2018 edition of Prisms. Keep an eye out for the 2019 edition, to be released this May.
