Reflections on Junior Unity
SJND’s Class of 2018 gathered to celebrate their third year of camaraderie at the annual Junior Unity Liturgy at St. Joseph Basilica. The juniors attended mass together and commemorated their transitions to upperclassmen in the school community: embracing their new positions of leadership and service as well as their academic, spiritual, and communal responsibilities.
All juniors and their families were invited to attend the ceremony, where juniors received their class gift of a customized bottle and their class rings, which served to strengthen their bond as a class. Juniors were also invited to participate in the mass through readings, altar serving, distributing Holy Communion, and bringing up the gifts of bread and wine. Deacon Matthew Murray delivered a sermon encouraging each member of the congregation to live in Christ’s example. He called on the juniors to always support their classmates and spend the rest of high school devoted to raising each other up amid the immense academic challenges.
The Junior Unity liturgy and reception provided a valuable bonding opportunity for the class to reflect on their high school journey thus far and commence their last two years in the SJND community as a joyous, tight-knit family. Chris Gerlach ’18 reflected, “This was an excellent opportunity for us to grow together as a class and celebrate the memorable experiences we have enjoyed at SJND.” In the same way, Joe Picchi ’18 said that he enjoyed the reflective spiritual atmosphere that allowed his class to join together as a supportive family.
