SF MOMA Immersion Trip – Discovering Modern Art Masters
Current SJND Advanced Art classes recently enjoyed a field trip to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art with their instructors Mr. Ritter and Mr. McKee. After a three year closure, the museum recently reopened, more than doubling its size to accommodate the newly acquired Fischer Collection of art. The students had the opportunity to experience the new building and immerse themselves in art ranging from the late 1800s to the present day.
The day began with a 45 minute tour, guided by staff who introduced the students to Pop, Minimal, and Figurative Art on the fifth floor and the photographer Anthony Hernandez on the third. Afterward, students explored the museum on their own to discover the artwork they liked best and least for a reflection essay assignment. Seeing the work of artists who they study in class – such as Diego Rivera, Chuck Close, Cindy Sherman, Piet Mondrian and Andy Warhol – was a very different experience “live” compared to on a screen. They also studied new forms of media including video installations, neon light paintings and minimalist sculptures. Many took advantage of the MOMA’s architecture and city location to conduct their own photoshoots through the floor-to-ceiling windows and on the tapered stairways.
Photography students in the Koret Visitor Education Center listening to their docent, Paul, offer advice on how to view art as they prepare to see the Anthony Hernandez show.
The trip was greatly assisted by parent chaperones Susan McCue, Noli Riordan, Julia Jawad, Patricia Custodio, Nicole Campion, Teresa Peña and Ana Goode who were essential for the smooth transportation and in guiding the students on this exciting city adventure.
