Sophomores Serve Neighbors in Need in the Tenderloin

SJND sophomores participated in an immersion retreat at St. Anthony’s in the Tenderloin district of San Francisco. The goal of the retreat is to give students a view of the social mission of the Catholic Church as they volunteer: developing awareness of the plight of the poor and the marginalized, and a determination to work for peace and justice in our society.

During their retreat, the St. Anthony Foundation provided diverse opportunities for students to meaningfully connect with the clients. Students served and ate with people visiting the dining room, or assisted with the free clothing program, or spent time with the elderly at the senior center. They also heard from a participant in rehabilitation for drug and alcohol addiction.

“What is the goal of all of these different ways of serving those in need?” asks SJND’s Deacon Matthew Murray. “Jesus tells us in the Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 25, that we can find Him among those who are poor. The task for our students on this retreat is to find out how.”
