Students Meet Poet-Activist Aimee Suzara and Explore Yerba Buena Center for the Arts

Robin Rodrigues' AP Language and Composition students took a day to visit the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco and meet Filipino-American poet-activist Aimee Suzara. The morning of March 13, Suzara spoke with our students about the politics of her poetry and what inspires her to write. Suzara also helped our students to articulate what they care about and develop their own writing voices.

In the afternoon, the adventure continued at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Gallery, where students explored "The Way Things Go," an exhibition of personal stories and vignettes intended to create a larger understanding of migration of people in the production of material culture. After enjoying a lecture from the gallery guide, students analyzed the visual and rhetorical elements of the show to interpret for themselves its meaning and purpose.

In their anonymous surveys of the day's experiences, students gave glowing reviews including, "inspirational," "awesome," and "it made me more aware of my surroundings." One student shared, "It brought me immensely closer to my culture and its struggles."
