Taylor Griffith '15 Receives Congressional Art Award from Congresswoman Barbara Lee
SJND received a special visit from Congresswoman Barbara Lee on Friday, May 8. Lee presented the Congressional Art Award to Taylor Griffith '15 for his inspirational digital image of Oakland's lake and downtown entitled "Oakland in my Dream." The annual Congressional Art Competition allows students from every congressional district in the U.S. to submit their works for consideration.
Taylor is the winner for Rep. Lee's 13th District of California. His photograph, along with works by other winners from across the United States, will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for a year. Along with the award, Congresswoman Lee presented Taylor with two plane tickets to a special reception in D.C. to meet other competition winners and to celebrate with a special reception.
SJND is honored to have Taylor's piece selected by a panel of artists from the Oakland Art Commission from an array of wonderful works by student artists from high schools across the district, which includes Alameda, Albany, Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland, Piedmont and San Leandro.
In addition to coming to SJND to present the award, the Congresswoman generously visited our AP Government class. Along with her expertise in government, she shared with students that her childhood school in El Paso was called St. Joseph's and that at the time she was growing up, because of segregation in the schools, the local Catholic school was the only one she was able to attend.
We are so proud of Taylor, and so honored to have Rep. Lee visit SJND in his honor.
