Welcome Milt Werner, SJND's Interim Principal | Saint Joseph Notre Dame High School

Welcome Milt Werner, SJND's Interim Principal

We are most pleased to announce that Milt Werner has graciously accepted Father George Alengadan’s offer to serve as SJND’s Interim Principal for the 2015-16 school year. Milt was unanimously recommended by the Principal Search Committee. He comes to SJND with a distinguished career that includes an impressive commitment to education, leadership and service and a deep connection to Catholic schools, Alameda and educational excellence in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Milt began his career in education as a teacher for more than a decade in Catholic schools. One of his first teaching engagements was teaching science here at St. Joseph’s High School from 1971-1975. His first role as principal was at James Logan High School in Union City. Milt then became a leader in Alameda, first as a Vice-Principal at Alameda High School, then as a Principal at Encinal High School, for nearly a decade of combined service and leadership in Alameda schools. At Encinal High School, Milt partnered with U.C. Berkeley to implement an Interactive Mathematics Program. The school was selected as a California State Model school for business careers.

Milt went on to serve as Director of the Sacred Heart Schools in Atherton, where he supervised principals and led a successful $12.5 million capital campaign. From there, Milt served as principal at San Leandro High School, Marin Catholic High School in Kentfield, and Washington High School in Fremont. From 2008-2010, Milt served as Superintendent of the Fremont Unified School District, where he was responsible for K-adult students at 42 schools with 4,000 employees.

Milt’s strength in partnering with and serving the broader community is as impressive as his career achievements. He has served on a number of education-specific and other boards, including the Board of our own St. Joseph Elementary and other Alameda-based organizations. He served on the Admissions Committee of the University of California at Berkeley, as a board member of the Alameda Education Foundation and was a member of the National Catholic Education Association.

In addition to credentials in teaching and administration, Milt earned his bachelor of science from St. Edwards University in Austin, his masters of science from California State University, East Bay, and his doctorate in education from University of San Francisco. Milt and his wife Barbara live in Berkeley and have four grown children and two grandchildren who are all nearby in Northern California.

We are very happy to welcome Milt and his family to our community. Under Milt’s leadership over the next academic year SJND will continue to flourish. Milt will officially begin his time at SJND July 1 and we will host an event that will provide an opportunity for all of us to welcome him aboard.

Thanks to all of our community members—students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni and the broader community—for providing input on the skills and experience you most value in SJND’s next leaders. Many thanks also to our Principal Search Committee members for their service and continued commitment as we move forward with the search process for a permanent principal. It is an exciting time to be part of the SJND family.
