Zavier Annis '20 Named CIF-NCS Scholar Athlete of the Year
Congratulations to senior Zavier Annis who has been named the 2020 CIF-NCS Male Scholar Athlete of the Year! Zavier is one of only 10 male students throughout the state of Califorrnia selected for this section honor, an impressive accomplishment considering the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) serves over 830,000 student-athletes throughout the state.
“Zavier has become one of the most accomplished and well-rounded scholar-athletes on our campus,” explained SJND Athletic Director Carlos Arriaga. “He is a mature and intelligent young man who has consistently demonstrated leadership, care, and service to others. In all my years working in Athletic Administration, Zavier is the first student I've known to receive what is the highest honor in representing the North Coast Section in the state of California,” Mr. Arriaga added.
Zavier, who was recently named SJND’s 2020 Valedictorian, participated in multiple sports throughout his tenure at SJND, including Frosh Basketball, Cross Country, and Track and Field. Primarily a sprinter and jumper, he placed first in the 200 meter dash and long jump at the 2018 NCS Class A Championships. Following graduation, Zavier will attend the University of California, San Diego, where he hopes to continue his track and field career.
The prestigious CIF Scholar Athlete Program recognizes student-athletes based on excellence in athletics, academics, and character. Zavier is one of only 20 Section athletes total (one male and one female from each of the 10 CIF Sections) to be selected for the honor and receive a $1,000 scholarship. Additionally, two student athletes, one male and one female, are selected as statewide winners and each receive a $5,000 scholarship as well as a visit to the State Capitol in Sacramento where they will be honored in front of the legislature.
