Volunteer Opportunities for Parents
SJND is known for its great community and prides itself on the many opportunities our students have to be involved in volunteer and leadership activities. Likewise, there are lots of opportunities for parental involvement. Click below for opportunities we encourage SJND parents to participate in. It is our hope that each family will consider volunteering for at least one event this next school year.
Parents Association Service Scholarship
Freshman $250: Diego Salgues ’20
The Parent Association was impressed by Diego’s involvement in a 100 mile bike ride with Bay Area Outreach and Recreation to help fund sports teams for paraplegic and quadriplegic student athletes.
Sophomore $500: Nikko Mendez ’19
Niko is involved in multiple service organizations on campus, and finds time to volunteer as an assistant teacher for kindergartners and as a lector at church.
Junior $750: Beatrice Levy ’18
Doing Random Acts of Kindness, leading retreats and peer tutoring, Beatrice drew our attention specifically for her visionary work collecting used glasses for local and international organizations.
Seniors: $1000: Mary Carmen Reid ’17 and Lea Akima ’17
Mary Carmen’s long standing involvement as a student ambassador with Girls Inc. encourages young girls to engage in STEM and helps to inspire a knowledge of eco-friendliness and sustainability through her involvement in Teen Committees, the Ethical Fashion Show and Zero Waste. She also uses her Spanish skills at La Clinica to advocate for the voiceless members of the underserved Hispanic population in the Fruitvale district of Oakland.
Lea is active in National Honors Society and is a student ambassador on and off campus. It was her involvement with a student led, school-based organization involved in local and global interests that impressed the Parent Association. However, her rise to a position on District Council overseeing 12 Interact clubs around the Bay Area confirmed her belief that her effort as ONE, inspired and became the efforts of many.
